Recently I started to try out rails again, now the version 4. So far I am still very pleased, but have to admit that I was out of it for too long. A lot of things have to be "normal" to be able to get the creative flow going. At this stage I am researching for most of the time. My goal is to use latex to put out pdf files. And the best solution is to create temporary folders through the ruby library and let it be controlled by rails session management. Because rails-latex seems to not fulfill my needs, a different purpose. Anyway... I stumbled over the gem rails_admin and find it very useful. You just install it, and it will create a devise setup for you and in a jiffy your app has a admin backend through which you can control EVERYTHING. Regarding the every day programmer creating apps for customers it may seem to be too much, but for me its perfect for I know what to do with the full access to all the models. After migrating my server from one account to another, basically setting it up again, I ran into some problems with my etherpad lite installation. Since my first post on this I wanted to add some more users for more control whose group is accessing what pad. But there was always something wrong! My conclusions: use "service etherpad-lite restart" instead of the /admin restart button make sure that apache is running or restart it often enough change the bloody JSON file trough the /admin interface since its telling you about corrupt syntax Last point on the list was my major problem for I forgot to put down some more blanks in order to have the JSON hierarchy. After that was sorted my basic authentication ALMOST worked: dont use "requiresession = true" for it messes up some stuff somehow Now my installation works like a charm with my postgresql database.

First of all, I like these little problems because they make me so much better with dealing with linux. And since its a hobby of mine, I cant really complain. Anyway, it took me a while to figure out that postgresql could not connect via the console because of some settings regarding authorization. Go to your pg_hba.conf and change from peer to md5 and you can login your database with your user and password. ----------------------------------------------------------- The second thing also troubled me a while and I was checking everything, because the log files did tell what was going wrong. passenger was running fine apache2 was set up ok, same with my virtual hosts and rvm was running wonderfully But I could not connect to my virtual hosts. I had some trouble setting up my webmin panel, and one thing was firefox with its port protection. Just do the following: about:config as url add string value: network.security.ports.banned.override fill it with a comma seperated list, e.g. just 10000 for webmin And of course the ports must be open or listend at on the server, test this on the server with:   netstat -an | grep :10000 And locally you can also do a nmap your.server.com

My centOS vserver broke down after a "yum update" and even the centOS community forum could not give an answer within 24h. In my books that is poor for the almighty and stable centOS. Lately I was looking for a wiki software for storing tips on how to manage a server or setup some rails stuff etc. This blog is nice and fine for that, and also save from me due to some hacks or misconfiguration on my server, but also hard to find. wagn is great because it can arrange bits of data as they come along. After starting to use refinerycms I ran into some problems with my settings after deploying my app with capistrano. First of all I was concerned with how the cms would work: somebody does something offline, e.g. coding a view and online somebody is writing a page or creating users How would this go together without dataloss? I ask my question and got some good answers - quick as well: deployment to production with capistrano to vserver - consistency question regarding databases and cms settings - NOT heroku Bottom line was: refinerycms is using files for settings online users will just work with the database, offline users/coders do scripting therefore merging is easy For me it was not that easy at all because I used sqlite3 for developement and production and had to tell capistrano how to keep ONE database alive while rolling out releases: in database.yml production:   adapter: sqlite3   database: /var/www/*****/shared/ production.sqlite3   pool...

After changing my system to manjaro I had to recover some settings, and sadly had to do some things again, e.g. my ssh login via rsa keys. After doing it manually I saw this 3 step answer on some message board: ssh-keygen Press Enter key till you get the prompt ssh-copy-id -i root@ip_address (It will once ask for the password of the host system) ssh root@ip_address Now you should be able to login without any password One thing I had to change: chmod 700 .ssh on the remote machine, and then it worked like a charme.

Two posts ago I wrote about my disappointing experiences with manjaro, but after testing a beta version I am all in and love it! First: not just the graphic card was initialized correctly but also font rendering. And after getting into grips with yaourt (the arch linux user repos app) I will always go for manjaro again. It is just not simple enough for beginners with linux hence you have to install codecs by hand, meaning knowing their names. So my vote goes to mint for beginners, but for me it is perfect.

First of all, once a while I enjoy digging deep into a linux version. So I decided to use the free time before my wedding to burry my head in linux and the command line. Recently I found a site about the best distros 2013 so far and read about the upcoming rolling releases of manjaro and sabayon. A rolling release is something nice and after being stuck with kdenlive in an old version with no functional support for slow motion I considered it to be something nice always ahead with updates. Well, both manjaro and sabayon worked fine as a live cd, but installed they turned into hell. AND THE WINNER IS: fucking ATI! I will never buy a laptop with ATI again - it just sucks. Manjaro is very young and talked about as a light arch linux, but it was everything but light, and the wiki or help pages were very thin, same goes for community support: read the wiki.... do more reading.. blablabla. Sabayon is a gentle approach of bringing gentoo to the masses, and it was nice to try...

Yesterday our new camcorder arrived, mainly bought for our wedding and "broadcasting" some stuff to either my father and Jenny's family. The quality is great and definitely better than with my NIKON P300 and I think the main part of the camcorder is the processor and the ability to save large numerbs of megabytes to the flash card. Here my first attempt (pardon my pronounciation): At dusk I used my tripod to film our Grey Tit nesting box outside my grandfather gave us. The first attempt was ok but then I tried it a bit nearer and got some nice shots. Slow motion with linux was trickier than I thought: cut the big 2 GB file with avidemux (qt) in pieces joint them again with avidemux [very fast] then tried kdenlive, but slow motion is broken [fedora 17 though] did it with openshot by the property dialog had to adjust the length again with the "resize tool" then rendered it not for youtube, but as mp4 in HD 720p 30 fps The camcorder is fun...

Firstly I had to adjust the HEAD of my bare repo with some brute force like: git push --force origin 688ec48e36b747b3820d55925268f51978be96d0:master After my server bare repo was up-to-date again I could go for a closer look at capistrano and deploying my rails app. Do this on your server to get some idea of the problem: tail -n 30 log/production.log It will give you the latest 30 lines of log output. For me it were two things: precompiling did not work: I had to have a closer look at my deploy.rb etc and found some big mistakes of mine. I precompiled everything and some was already done so it had e.g. sass variables and the compiler collapsed. Just try this to see if you app runs fine: RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rake assets:precompile --trace my server app just had empty sqlite3 files so my migration did not work : Log into your server and have a look or do some migrations manually. I read this and changed my deploy.rb file so cap deploy:migrate is run everytime...

Dies wird nur ein kurzer Post, aber ich möchte den Tipp loswerden, weil er mich gestern einige Zeit kostete. Wenn ich mit Latex Arbeiten für die Schule erstelle, verwende ich u.a. die Dokumentenklasse exam, um Aufgaben und Lösungen zu trennen. Dabei sorgt tikz für eine ansprechende Optik, z.B. Koordinatensystem u.v.m. Schon seit einiger Zeit bin ich bei Messern in Richtung robusterer bzw. einfacherer Stähle am Gucken. Dies Ganze geschah aufgrund eines Zufalls auf Ebay, dass ich ein Windmühlenmesser von Herder erstand, dazu aber später vielleicht mehr. Gestern wurde ich zum Glück vom Unterricht freigestellt, um mit einer Kollegin zum ersten und bisher einzigen Vortrag John Hatties in Deutschland in Oldenburg zu fahren. Hattie ist ein Bildungswissenschaftler mit Hang zu Meta-Analysen, genauso wie Hilbert Meyer. Und genauso wie letzterer hat er Charme und kann durch seine Art überzeugen. Aber auch inhaltlich hat er etwas zu bieten, was erst auf dem zweiten Blick wunderbar und neu ist, denn der Schlüssel seines Reizes liegt in der Zusammenführung und Beurteilung von ca. 800 Studien mit 250mal sovielen SchülerInnen "in Frage" als z.B. PISA. Letztens hatten wir mal wieder versucht, Pete nach draussen zu bekommen, um ihm die Schönheit des Frühlings zu zeigen. Aber auch ein ruhiger Sonntag war nichts für ihn, er wollte immer wieder zurück zur Haustür, wo er durch die Glasscheibe guckte und heulte: Er ist dann doch ein indoor Kater, ... ... der den Balkon bevorzugt... ... und erst kürzlich Balkonkästen entdeckte, und leider auch immer wieder etwas Dreck hineinträgt.

Letztens wollte ich mal wieder Brot backen und ging dem Sauerteig auf die Spur. Man füttert ihn in drei Schritten, und erhält meist so 400g Sauerteig, den sogenannten Vollsauer. Davon braucht man allerdings nur die Hälfte für einen Laib von 500-1000g, da das Brot sonst auch viel zu sauer wird. Damit ich viele Hefen erhalte, ziehe ich den Sauerteig sowieso im Backofen bei eingeschaltetem Licht (ca. 33 Grad Celsius). So nahm ich diesmal nur zwei Esslöffel Sauerteig pro 100g Mehl, dazu 1 Teelöffel Zucker pro 100g Mehl, und ließ den Teig dann 2-3 Stunden in der Kastenform warm ruhen, um das Brot erst 15 min bei 250, dann ca. 50 min bei 180 Grad zu backen: Das Ergebnis war einfach nur herrlich! So verspeisten wir am Wochenende ganze 2 Laibe Brot ;)

I like to go with the newest trends since I am not really held back by any production site. So I had a look around and decided to install a new database system. The first thing you might want to consider is the growing hype of NoSQL db's like mongodb, couchdb etc. But after reading this I changed my mind: you-got-nosql-in-my-postgres-using-hstore-in-rails Having done this several times before with no gain of a working db server I looked around for a decent tutorial providing me with just the right steps: install-postgresql-on-fedora-centos-red-hat-rhel There I even had the howto for my CentOS-Server after deploying with postgresql. Nachdem ich die letzten Tage intensiv programmiert hatte, überdachte ich meine Wahl des Editors unter Linux nochmals: gedit ist ganz nett, gerade wenn es um Snippets geht, also Autovervollständigungen, die man z.B. immer beim Mac mit Textmate sieht. Mich störte dabei aber, dass ich nicht ALLE Dokumente gleichzeitig speichern konnte. Aptana Studio 3 kann dies ganz gut lösen, indem es eine Schaltfläche "save all" gibt. Und auch ansonsten ist der Editor ganz nett, weil ich dabei nicht immer über smartgit an mein git muss, sondern eingebaute git-Funktionen habe, genausogut wie Rails-Befehle wie "rails s" usw. Beide Editoren sind wunderbar für kleine Arbeiten, aber nach den vielen Zeilen Code, die ich kopierte, einfügte, testete usw. nervt es manchmal schon, wenn man die Mouse nebenbei benutzen muss. Ausserdem stürzte mir Aptana ab und an mal ab, und sowas DARF einfach nicht passieren! Auf der Kommandozeile benutze ich immer noch gerne nano , welcher ein wunder...

Right now I am very happy! I finished my work on creating a file upload method in rails for more than one file, altogether handled by rails sessions and as objects. First I had to learn a bit more about how rails works and I achieved that by reading a lot: books, screencasts and blogs. Der Fleischwolf-Aufsatz für meine Küchenmaschine wurde ja schon erwähnt, aber eher in vegetarischen Zusammenhängen bei der Zubereitung von Sojabohnenbrei. Ein großes Argument für den Kauf war aber auch die Möglichkeit eigene Würste herstellen zu können. Obwohl ich kein Wurstfreund bin.... STOPP.... gerade weil ich kein Wurstfreund bin, wrollte ich meine eigene Würze finden. Um mich vorher nochmals zu "erden" kaufte ich mir Frischwurst vom Metzger, die ich als Bratwurst zubereitete - ehlend fad. Deswegen bin auch kein Freund von Wurst, erinnere mich aber an leckere Würste aus dem bayrischen Bereich, die mit Käse gefüllt waren, und dazu auch noch lecker gewürzt. Also schnell Schweinedarm usw. bestellt und eingelesen in ein paar Rezepte und das Verfahren. Seit einiger Zeit möchte ich ein Projekt realisieren, und stolperte von Joomla zu CakePHP zurück zu Joomla, um dann bei Ruby On Rails zu landen (kurz RoR oder einfach Rails). Mittlerweile bin ich gefesselt von Rails. Aber vorweg zur Frage, was denn Rails überhaupt ist, denn darin liegt ein großer Teil der "Kraft". Ich möchte eine Internetseite programmieren, aber nicht einfach nur EINE Seite, sondern dynamisch erstellter Inhalt, der auch noch Inhalte je nach Auswahl an den Nutzer liefert. Eine typische Anwendung ist ein Online-Shop, bei welchem der Nutzer Produkte in den Warenkorb "legt", um sie dann zu bestellen bzw. gemeinsam auf einer Rechnung an den Betreiber zu schicken. Natürlich kann man dies alles "zu Fuß" machen, aber die ganzen Datenbankenrelationen im Hintergrund (Produkte, Kunden, Aufträge, Warenkörbe usw.) sind alleine schon genug, um verrückt werden zu können. Letztens kam mir "Der große Haushaltscheck" unter die Finger: ARD Mediathek "Der große Haushaltscheck" In der Sendung vom 11.3.2013 ging es um unser Trinkwasser. Jedem sollte klar sein, dass Plastikflaschen nicht die erste Wahl sind, weil man nicht darauf vertrauen kann, dass der Hersteller wirklich "gutes" Plastik nahm (BPA, Phtalate, Benzol, Xylol usw.), aber das interessante waren die genannten Zahlen in puncto virtuellem Wasser bzw. Wassersparen. Wasser sparen an und für sich ist ja gut, nur heisst das nicht, dass wir weniger die Klospühlung benutzen sollten, sondern dass wir uns Gedanken machen über das "virtuelle Wasser". Obwohl ich mich zwar gerade am "cload atlas", also dem Wolkenatlas, versuche, soll es hier nun um das Speichern im Netz gehen, und nicht um das Buch. In der Vergangenheit hatte ich dann und wann schon mal Pech mit meinen Rechnern; und war dann auch immer froh, dass ich wenigstens EIN Backup hatte, auch wenn es vielleicht etwas aelter war. Ein weiterer Punkt bildete meine Faulheit: ich hatte in der Vergangenheit Dateien auf dem USB-Stick zur Schule genommen, sollten mir Fehler auffallen, und um sicher zu gehen, z.B. bei muendlichen Pruefungen oder gewissen Arbeiten. Fuer beides gibt es ja schon lange Loesungen, und dropbox ist da fast immer der erste Anbieter, der einem einfaellt; jedoch auch der erste im Sinn, wenn es um Sicherheitsluecken geht. Daher recherchierte ich lange und stand letztendlich vor der Wahl zwischen Wuala und Spideroak, weil mit Verschluesselung. Beide arbeiten verschluesselt, und haben auch wenige GB kostenlos fuer den kleinen Privatkunden; Ges...

Nebenbei halte ich mir einen Sauerteig und füttere ihn alle 1-2 Tage. Da er dabei stetig wächst, musste mal wieder ein Brot gebacken werden: Es ist leider etwas sauer, wobei die Säure mit der Zeit nachlässt, es waren aber auch 3/4 Teig aus dem Sauerteig gekommen, dass die Säure nicht wirklich überrascht - schmeckt richtig gut! In einem anderen Beitrag hatte ich ja mal darauf hingewiesen, dass Edelstahl ganz gut ist als Form, weil es Wärme gut leitet und sich auch nicht zerkratzen lässt. Im Bild seht Ihr nun die Form, nachdem das Brot "herausgefallen" ist.

... der Fleischwolf. Das Bild zeigt das zweite Wolfen von eingeweichten Sojabohnen, um daraus erst Soja-Milchiges (Milch DARF man laut Gesetz nicht sagen!) herzustellen, und dann Calciumchlorid hinzu, um Tofu zu gewinnen. Der Rest des ausgefilterten Sojaschrotts (zum milchigem) hat sich in ein Brot verwandelt. Der entstandene Tofu ging zusammen mit Mais, Ziegenkäse, Karotten und Ei in Bürger, die wir mit selbstgemachten Pitas aßen. Der Fleischwolf ist deswegen so toll, weil er ohne Mucken die Maße klein macht. Und auch für Falafeln wunderbar, denn der normale Mixer hat teilweise Probleme mit den immer noch harten Hülsenfrüchten.

Nachdem wir zig Sendungen gesehen haben, in denen die Brühe/Jou/Suppe/Fond zelebriert worden ist, musste ich es einfach ausprobieren. Und ganz frisch vom Huhn anstatt Instant aus der Dose schmeckt einfach besser. Dazu habe ich das Huhn erst filetiert, teilweise Fleisch weggepackt für andere Gerichte, und dann die zerschlagenen Knochen erst im Ofen geröstet, und dann laaannngeee im Topf ausgekocht. Das Bild unten zeigt ein solches Ergebnis, wo ich auch nicht gefiltert/geklärt hatte, und die Haut seperat im Ofen kross gebacken hatte: So ein Suppenhuhn kostet 3-5 EURO, von Aldi bis Ultra-Bio (Alnatura), und gibt Grundlage für wunderbar herrliche Suppen, die komplex schmecken und gerade bei Kälte oder als Vorspeise herrlich sind.

Als eine wunderbare Investition haben sich meine Blaublech-Pizzableche herausgestellt. Generell mag ich kein Antihaftzeug, weil das Zeug schnell abgekratzt und dann auch noch gesundheitsschaedlich ist. Und es gibt wunderbare Materialien, die bei gesonderter Behandlung auch super klappen bzw. nicht haften. Da waeren: mein neuer Favorit: Emaille Blaublech (pures Eisen, Oberflaeche dunkelblau/schwarz oxidiert) Edelstahl Gusseisen (habe kleine Servier-Pfannen) Solche Formen sind in der Regel etwas teurer, aber wunderbar im Einsatz. Ich haette niemals gedacht, dass Emaille so super beim Backen ist: nicht haftet, dazu eine herrliche Kruste bzw. Karamallisierung. Die folgendes Quiches sind aber zusaetzlich mit Backpapier gebacken worden, um die Quiche komplett aus der Form holen zu koennen. Kleiner Nachzügler: gefüllt mit Organgenkrokant

Dieses Rezept kam uns auf den Teller, als wir in einer Seitenstraße in Amsterdam ein niedliches Restaurante fanden. Das Personal war übersichtlich und sehr freundlich: Van Kerkwijk. Dort bekam ich ein Steak auf Blauschimmelkäse mit Erbeersauce. Und auch, wenn es sich wunderbar zubereiten läßt, wollte ich alles mehr zerlaufen und wärmer haben, also dann die Roulade: In der kleinen Pfanne sind glasig gebratene Zwiebeln, auf die die Roulade gelegt wird, um dann im Ofen eine sehr leckere Sauce zu bilden, und mit der Erbeersauce hat man dann die Wahl - eine wahres Festmahl:

Mein Pralinenprojekt trug folgende Früchte: gefüllt mit weißer Schokolade und Krokant Und ab hier Experimente mit einer Rum- bzw. Whisky-Ganache:   Letztendlich werde ich wohl Schnittpralinen mit Ganache bevorzugen, oder gleich gefüllte aus der Form.  

... wurde nicht vom Maya-Kalendar bestimmt, trotzdem werden Menschen ihre Hände im Spiel haben. Im ARTE-Film "Unser täglich Gift" wird dem auch ein Name gegeben, der inhaltlich sowas meint wie: Stück um Stück bereiten wir unseren Genozid Damit gemeint ist, dass wir täglich Lebensmittelzusätze oder andere Stoffe zu uns nehmen, die uns auf lange Sicht unfruchtbar machen, bzw. dazu führen, dass unsere Kinder unfruchtbar werden. Sehr effizient und fast schon "geschickt" sorgen wir dafür, dass die Menschheit nicht für die Ewigkeit bestehen wird. Dazu gibt es auch einen sehr schönen aktuelleren Bericht: Hauptsache haltbar! Legal kann man nur einen Ausschnitt sehen, aber jeder weiss, dass das Internet nichts vergißt, und man u.U. ALLES finden kann. Jedenfalls wird hier vor Phtalaten gewarnt. Weichmacher in Lebensmittelverpackungen, von Konventionell bis hin zu Bio; von Plastikhülle bis hin zu Gläsern (weil im Verschluss!). So kann dann auch d...
